Greetings Oregon and SW Washington Pastoral Musicians,Welcome to the month of September!  
Your NPM Portland Oregon Board members have planned four meetings and presentations for all pastoral musicians in the coming year. The first is Saturday morning, September 28. More information is available in this e-mail below. There will be other local events announced throughout the year as the information becomes available.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the local pastoral musicians Membership Dues survey earlier this year. The results are: $35.00 individual membership/per year; and, $100.00 parish  music ministry membership/per year. What do you receive with your local membership? Pastoral and spiritual formation and programming as well as discounts to local fee-based events. Membership dues may be paid beginning at the September Chapter meeting. More information to follow about method of payment. (Please note: This is for local Oregon Chapter dues which is separate from a membership for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians).

9:30 – 11:00 AM: Meeting Agenda in two parts: 

1) Sharing New Songs & Hymns: Please bring a new piece of music with piano accompaniment to share (about 15-20 copies; for workshop use only) that you will be introducing to your congregation and choir this year. 

2) Presentation and Discussion on “good practices” for Service Music led by Michael Prendergast and Wendy Hein, NPM Oregon Board Members. Questions to consider: How do you prepare for liturgical music? How do you introduce new music? Who plans the music: more than one person, more than one group, just one person? What tools/materials do you use to aid in planning?

Board meeting: 11 AM – 12 noon

Fall Parish Leaders Day – three (3) different dates and locations: September 7, September 21 and October 12 

The parish leadership day is an opportunity for any and all leaders to gather, pray, and take a step back and look at how our parishes can be places of accompaniment and missionary discipleship. Online Learning Opportunities: Fall 2019

NPM National Office in partnership with Liturgical Training Publications offers online learning opportunities. Two of these opportunities from The Essentials of Catholic Liturgy: A Foundational Course for Pastoral, Liturgical and Music Ministers (ECL), a three-track series that we often refer to as “ECL,” and the third is a Virtual Workshop:Cantor Series. Consider participating in one or more of the following online programs this Fall.

We are looking for a new part-time Music Coordinator and would like your help in spreading the word. The successful candidate will provide music for weekend Masses and for other church celebrations.  The applicant will have knowledge and commitment to the mission of the parish and the Catholic Church, along with being proficient in his or her performance area. St Francis Catholic Church, Sherwood, Oregon: Piano Accompanist 

The parish is seeking a part-time piano accompanist to accompany up to two of our weekend masses. We are looking for an experienced pianist, who ideally has prior experience playing for a Catholic mass, a strong passion for music, and a desire to be an active participant in the music program. The ideal candidate would be available for one or two masses on Sunday (7:30am-9:30 am and/or 4:30pm-6:30pm). Compensation is negotiable per skill level and experience.

Greetings Oregon and SW Washington Pastoral Musicians,Welcome to the month of July!  The NPM (National Association of Pastoral Musicians) Annual Convention will be happening in Raleigh, North Carolina from July 15th through the 20th.


Many of us are unable to attend, but the National NPM Office has made the members meeting a live streaming event available to anyone. Greetings Oregon and SW Washington Pastoral Musicians,Welcome to the month of June! Together, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord this weekend – the 40 days of the Easter Season, and, Pentecost Sunday on June 9 – the 50 days of the Easter Season. My hope is that your Easter Season has been a blessing for you, your music ministry and your parish communities.
Attached are the Saturday, April 27 meeting minutes. There are two items I would like to bring to your attention. Those in attendance continued the conversation about the recent Archbishop’s Pastoral Letter on Sacred Music. Several people have asked about the slides from March 2019 presentation on the Pastoral Letter. If you would like a copy of the slides, please contact me.
The NPM WOMM Core Team is meeting on Friday morning, June 14 to create the 2019-2020 local Chapter meeting, presentation schedule and events. Do you have a suggestion for topic to be presented? an event topic and/or presenter you would like to suggest? Here are some suggestions I have received: 1) Cantor training (NPM Cantor Certification); 2) a Day of Reflection for Pastoral Musicians, such as “Care of the Pastoral Musician”; an OCP Reading Session. Please submit your suggestions by June 13.

If you have responded to the survey – Thank you! All Pastoral Musicians in Oregon and SW Washington – please respond: Beginning July 2019, the local NPMWOMM Chapter will begin to accept individual and parish membership dues to support the local chapter and any potential expenses related to the chapter including formation and education of pastoral musicians as well as future events with local and/or national presenters. The ‘local’ dues are separate from the dues of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. Attached is a form to survey all local pastoral musicians. Please complete the survey, scan and e-mail to my attention, or, copy into the body of an e-mail. Your input is vital to the future of the local chapter and will guide the local NPM WOMM board members.

Planning Through the Church Year: Thinking Liturgically and MusicallyMonday, June 24, 9:30am – 12pm The Church Music Institute will offer this workshop which will present insights for busy church musicians to find excellent music quickly. This session will focus on techniques for planning worship utilizing unique, ecumenical liturgical templates developed for six of the major festivals of the liturgical year. Participants will be guided by Church Music Institute staff Dr. Charlotte Kroeker, Dr. Robert Mann, and Benjamin Kolodziej, through a process for sensitively and thoughtfully choosing service music—choral, organ, and piano—utilizing online resources, denominational publications, and CMI’s own online library of 18,000 choral and 12,000 organ titles.  This workshop, held in the Fine Arts Center of Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, will benefit musicians serving all sizes of churches, offering them practical ideas on hymn selection, psalmody, creative use of the hymnal, and suggestions for communion music.  This session, along with a hymn festival at Trinity Episcopal Church147 N.W. 19th Avenue, the evening prior – Sunday, June 23 at 7:00 PM, will constitute CMI’s annual summer workshop in Portland normally held in August. Workshop Fees: The workshop is offered for $25 to members of CMI, AGO, ACDA, and ALCM, and $50 for others. For more information: Visit www.churchmusicinstitute.org or contact Benjamin Kolodziej, Program Director (bkolodziej@churchmusicinstitute.org). ———————-

April Newsletter

Greetings Oregon and SW Washington Pastoral Musicians. Blessings to you as we begin the Fourth Week of the Lenten Season. My prayer for each of you is that your music preparations for Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum are going well.

Our next NPM Oregon meeting is scheduled Saturday, April 27, 9:00 AM at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Oregon City. The meeting will continue the conversation begun on March 9th of the Archdiocese Pastoral Letter on Sacred Music for Divine Worship “Sing to the LORD a New Song” (The meeting minutes are attached.). Antiphons and other music of the liturgical seasons will be presented. If you have music that you would like to present, let me know so I may inform our presenters.
